Facts about hearing loss

Genetics, infectious diseases, excessive noise and aging all cause hearing loss

1.1 billion young people (aged between 12–35 years) are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings.

Unaddressed hearing loss can increase the likelihood of dementia, depression and isolation.

People with hearing loss benefit from early identification; use of hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices; captioning and sign language; and other forms of educational and social support.

FAQ's About Hearing Aids

  1. Appropriately fitted hearing aids provide improved speech understanding in most situations.
  2. While hearing aids do not "block out background noise", the latest hearing aid technology allows background noise to be better managed for easier listening.
  3. You will get the most benefit from your hearing aids by wearing them every day. It takes time to become familiar to hearing aids, and the more you wear them, the more comfortable all sounds will be.
  4. Hearing aid prices include professional services of specialists in the selection, fitting, and long-term maintenance of the devices while the hearing aids are under the manufacturer's original warranty. Take advantage of these services by making and keeping regular follow-up visits!
  5. Most people need two hearing aids as people hear best with both ears.
  6. Hearing changes over time. Regular hearing checks allow better insight to allow hearing aids to be re-programmed if necessary.

Why should I have a hearing test?

Hearing tests check a person's ability to hear the loudness of sounds and speech understanding. The results are charted on a graph called an audiogram to help pinpoint the severity and cause of hearing loss. A hearing test includes pure tone audiometry and speech discrimination tests. Hearing tests are the first step to determine the best way to help you to better hearing.

Signs that you should get a hearing test

Some signs that you may need to have your hearing checked include:

  1. People are mumbling
  2. You hear a ringing sensation in the ears
  3. People complain that you talk too loudly
  4. You constantly ask people to repeat themselves
  5. You find it difficult to hear conversations, especially with background noise present
  6. People complain that your television is too loud
